Sump Pump Services for South Charlotte Homeowners

A sump pump does nothing at all for years and then has one job on the worst night of the year. Piedmont thunderstorms drop a lot of water in a short window, and a pump that has been sitting dry since the last one is exactly when the float sticks.

Testing, repair and replacement

We test the float, the check valve, the discharge run and the pump itself under load — pouring water in, not just listening to it start. Discharge lines that terminate too close to the foundation are one of the most common faults we find, and they simply recycle the same water back into the pit.

Battery backup

The storms that flood a basement are the storms that take the power out. A battery backup pump runs when the primary cannot, and for a finished basement it is the cheapest insurance in the house. We install and service both AC and DC systems.

Annual service

One visit before the wet season: clean the pit, test the switch, check the check valve, confirm the discharge. It takes half an hour and it is the difference between a working pump and a decorative one.

Questions

Sump Pump Services — questions we get asked

How do I test my sump pump?

Pour a bucket of water into the pit until the float lifts. The pump should start, clear the pit and stop cleanly. If it does not start, keeps running after the pit is empty, or cycles rapidly, it needs looking at.

How long do sump pumps last?

Seven to ten years is typical, less if it cycles often. If yours is over ten and you have a finished basement, replace it on your schedule rather than during a storm.

Do I need a battery backup?

If losing the basement would be expensive — finished space, stored belongings, a home office — then yes. The power almost always goes out during exactly the storm that needs the pump most.
