Sewer Pump Repair, Replacement & Installation
If a bathroom, laundry or wet bar sits below the level of the sewer line — a basement, a walk-out, a converted lower floor — the waste has to be pumped up to it. When that pump stops, there is no warning and nowhere for anything to go. It is the one piece of household plumbing where a failure is immediate and unpleasant.
Ejector pumps and grinder pumps
A sewage ejector sits in a sealed basin and lifts waste from a below-grade bathroom up to the gravity line. A grinder pump does the same job but macerates first, which is what a long discharge run or a low-pressure municipal sewer connection needs. They are not interchangeable, and fitting the cheaper one where the system needs the other is the most common mistake we are called out to undo.
What actually fails
Float switches, more than anything — they hang up, or they are set at the wrong level and the pump short-cycles itself to death. After that it is check valves letting the discharge run back into the basin, impellers jammed by wipes and hygiene products, seized seals letting water into the motor, and basin lids that were never sealed properly and are venting sewer gas into the house.
Repair or replace
A float, a check valve or a switch is a repair, and usually a same-visit one. A motor that has taken water, or a unit past about ten years that is on its second fault, is a replacement — and we will show you which one you are looking at rather than just telling you.
Installed so the next failure is not a flood
Every replacement gets a properly sized basin, a sealed and vented lid, a check valve and an isolation valve on the discharge, and a dedicated circuit. We fit an audible high-water alarm as standard, because on this one piece of equipment the warning is worth more than the pump.

Sewer Pump Services — questions we get asked
What is the difference between a sewage ejector and a grinder pump?
An ejector lifts solids as they are, through a larger discharge pipe, over a short run. A grinder macerates first so it can push through a much smaller pipe over a long run or into a low-pressure sewer main. Which one you need is set by your discharge run and your connection, not by preference — and fitting the wrong one is the fault we are most often called to correct.
My basement bathroom smells. Is that the pump?
Very likely the basin lid rather than the pump itself. The lid has to be sealed and separately vented; when the gasket fails or the vent was never run, sewer gas comes into the room. It is usually a straightforward fix and it is worth doing quickly.
How long does a sewer pump last?
Seven to ten years is typical, and much less if wipes and hygiene products go down it — nothing shortens a pump's life faster. If yours is past ten and has needed a part already, budget for replacement rather than a third repair.
Do you fit an alarm?
Yes, as standard on every replacement. On this one piece of equipment the warning that the basin is filling is worth more than the pump, because it turns a flooded basement into a phone call.
